Collections

This collection consists of a scrapbook that belonged to William E. Land, class of 1941, while a student at the College of William and Mary. Included in the scrapbook are photographs of William and Mary buildings and grounds, students, Commencement, and Colonial Williamsburg buildings. There are also loose photographs and an article from 1972 regarding Land's appointment as Judge of the Municpal Court in Danville, Virginia.

Series III of the William Faulkner Collection contains the personal papers, files, belongings, and related realia of William Faulkner. Materials in the collection range in date from 1824 to 2003 and are divided into eight subseries: William Faulkner's working papers related to his literary works, drawings made by Faulkner, his childhood ephemera and student records, military and flight records, family papers, honors and awards, belongings and related realia, and reminiscences or accounts of William Faulkner.

Material collected by Dr. Adwin Wigfall Green of the University of Mississippi for preparation of his book written with James W. Webb, William Faulkner of Oxford. Included are letters to Green by Faulkner's daughter Jill Faulkner Summers; Jack Stone, a childhood friend of Faulkner; Dorothy Williams, a friend of Faulkner; and Murry Falkner, William Faulkner's brother; photostats of several letters, advertisements and a speech written by Faulkner; newspaper clippings; and periodical articles.

The practice of Long and Sadler, as documented in this collection, was characteristic of legal work in a small town in the early twentieth century. The cases are virtually all civil, primarily trusts and estates, real estate, insurance, torts, and divorce. From the earliest period of Long's practice, there are very few documents: one case file, two bound abstracts of title, and a ledger book dating from the early 1900s. After 1914, Long's time was apparently taken up primarily by his duties as Commissioner of Accounts, although he also served as attorney in trust and estate cases, and handled some divorces. The bulk of the cases documented here, therefore, are Sadler's.

The collection includes (Acc. 1987.35) an address by Prof. William George Guy at the Fourth Annual Honors Convocations, 1939; biographical materials and newspapers clippings; correspondence, 1930-1981; correspondence--Western Electric Company's Gift to the Physics Department in Memory of Loren Eastman Bennett, 1967; Pomfret, John Edwin--Portrait and Reminiscences, 1959-1966; publications; Robb, Robert Gilchrist--Portrait, 1958.

This collection consists of papers (approximately 50 items) that document the United States Marine Corps career of William G. McClure, Jr., VMI Class of 1943. The bulk of this collection is concerned with his active duty service during World War II, when he served with the 1st Marine Division in the Pacific and was awarded the Purple Heart. Other items include:

• Papers relating to his postwar service as a reserve officer
• Photographs, including one photograph of the Class of 1943 Ring Figure Dance (November 1941)
• Biographical and genealogical information

This collection predominantly contains the personal papers of William Gregory, including: journals, notebooks, property records, deeds, and family records. Approximately two-thirds of the collection comprise original correspondence, and late 20th century transcriptions of such.

Papers of the donor's stepfather, William Harrison Smith, superintendent and postmaster at the island of Jamestown, Virginia. Mostly business correspondence with Ellen Bagby of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (A.P.V.A.) with reports, Elbert Cox of the National Park Service and Ellen Harvie Smith of the A.P.V.A. Includes monthly general reports, financial reports, salary lists, tax forms, soil report certificates, photographs, and newspaper clippings.
