Collections

This collection consists of photographs of the Alphin Family of Rockbridge County, Va. There are two copies of earlier family group photographs and one copy of photos of Katherine Alphin and Phoebe Hayslett Alphin. All family group images are identified and include surnames Alphin, Dickson, Hardy, Snider, McGuffin, Teaford, Kirkpatrick, Cook, and Hazlett.

The papers of prominent Barbour County native, Alston G. Dayton (1857-1920), a lawyer, politician, and West Virginia Federal Court Judge, including correspondence, professional papers and manuscripts concerning West Virginia politics and development of state industry. Also included are the papers of Dayton's father, Spencer Dayton, lawyer, and Fred O. Blue, lawyer. Correspondence offers much insight into the attitudes and goals of these men and into their considerable direct and indirect influence on the state's development and welfare.

Collection contains Dayton's appointment certificate in the West Virginia University's Corps of Cadets (1878), newspaper articles containing speeches delivered by Dayton, copies and notes for speeches and lectures, notebooks, and an inventory of books owned by Dayton. Ephemera within the collection includes the 1898 report of the "New England Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania," and programs from the West Virginia Republican Association and the New York County Lawyers Association.

This collection consists of certificates, citations, commissions, and similar documentation associated with VMI alumni, faculty, staff, or VMI as a whole. The collection does not include VMI diplomas or literary society certificates, which are filed separately.

The records of the Alumni Association of the College of William and Mary include office files, material from select Executive Secretaries, meeting minutes, publications, correspondence, and other material documenting the activities of the William & Mary Alumni Association as well as the College of William & Mary's history and alumni more generally.

Account book, 1852-1856, of an unknown merchant, of Amelia County, Va. which includes account, 1872-1873; several reports of William R. Dunnavant, county superintendent of roads and bridges; copies of deeds, 1899-1903; a blueprint of a steel truss bridge; and loose papers.

This collection contains approximately 90 miscellaneous items connected with the government and people of the Confederate States of America, including correspondence, official orders, almanacs, bonds, paper money, sheet music, memorabilia, and clippings.

The collection consists mainly of certificates presented to Amos R. Koontz, M.D., by the army, together with his medals in a frame, and membership certificates in organizations. Included is a competition for designs for National Military Dress (1809); and shoemaker's account books of Harden Keyser (1849-1861), one of which Mattie Keyser used as a scrapbook at a later period and in which she wrote autograph poems; a souvenir booklet of the Panama Pacific Exposition (1915); and genealogical information on the Koontz, Graves, Stocking, Guy, Snyder, Dolan, Brown and Bageant families.

Personal and professional papers of Amos Ralph Koontz, surgeon. The personal papers, 1865-1986, include the correspondence of Koontz, his wife, Besse (Stocking) Koontz and their son, James William Koontz. Included are travel diaries, documents concerning the College of William and Mary and Johns Hopkins and material relating to social clubs and societies. The professional papers contain correspondence relating to Koontz' medical practice, political material, documents pertaining to military service, memberships in professional organizations, and newspaper and magazine article reprints.
