Background
- Scope and content:
-
The papers of prominent Barbour County native, Alston G. Dayton (1857-1920), a lawyer, politician, and West Virginia Federal Court Judge, including correspondence, professional papers and manuscripts concerning West Virginia politics and development of state industry. Also included are the papers of Dayton's father, Spencer Dayton, lawyer, and Fred O. Blue, lawyer. Correspondence offers much insight into the attitudes and goals of these men and into their considerable direct and indirect influence on the state's development and welfare.
A detailed paper guide to the Dayton-Woods collection (comprising the A&M collections 52, 206, 211, 215, 530, 741, 1066, 1111, 1216, 1445, 1723, 3022, and 3023) can be found in the control folder for A&M 0052. An electronic copy of the same guide is available through a curator at the History Center.
