This collection (two items) consists of a notebook containing original poetry by Francis B. Clark, including "Natural Bridge," "To the Lee Family," and "Washington and Lee." The collection also contains one privately printed poem "The Irish Emigrant."

This collection consists of two letters (dated February 11 and 18, 1868) from Cadet George T. Coleman (VMI Class of 1870) to his brother William D. Coleman (VMI Class of 1857, later editor of the Richmond Enquirer). The primary subject of the February 11th letter is Cadet Coleman's reinstatement at VMI. The letter dated February 18 encloses a Letter to the Editor in which Coleman defends the Corps of Cadets against accusations that they had been harassing black citizens of Lexington, Virginia. This collection also includs the envelopes.

This collection consists of certificates awarded to graduating members by two 19th century cadet literary and debating organizations known as The Society of Cadets (established 1840) and the Virginia Dialectic Society (established 1848). The certificates of James V. Hall (Class of 1852) and Edward L. Fant (Class of 1856) were autographed by classmates.

This collection consists of one letter (dated March 26, 1869) from James W. Cooper to VMI Commandant Scott Shipp. The letter tenders Cooper's resignation as Sergeant of D Company. An endorsement by Cadet Captain James L. Ford (VMI Class of 1869) is on the verso.

The Joseph R. Anderson, Jr. papers consist of drafts and related correspondence for a three part, largely unpublished, work entitled "A Complete History of the Virginia Military Institute, 1839-1924." One part was eventually published as "VMI in the World War." Also included are VMI-related notes and papers.

The VMI diplomas collection consists of VMI diplomas from various eras. The oldest is that of Edmund Pendleton, Class of 1842. Contact the VMI Archives for a complete list.
