The Joseph R. Anderson, Jr. papers consist of drafts and related correspondence for a three part, largely unpublished, work entitled "A Complete History of the Virginia Military Institute, 1839-1924." One part was eventually published as "VMI in the World War." Also included are VMI-related notes and papers.
- Biographical / historical:

Joseph Reid Anderson, Jr. was born in 1851 in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from VMI in 1870, and had a lifelong association with VMI as a faculty member, Alumni Association president, and official "historiographer." He also was an iron manufacturer and farmer in Lee, Goochland County, Virginia. Anderson died in 1930.
