This collection consists of one letter (dated March 26, 1869) from James W. Cooper to VMI Commandant Scott Shipp. The letter tenders Cooper's resignation as Sergeant of D Company. An endorsement by Cadet Captain James L. Ford (VMI Class of 1869) is on the verso.
- Biographical / historical:

James Washington Cooper was born in 1842 in Bedford County, Tennessee. He graduated VMI in 1870. During the Civil War he was an officer with the Confederate States of America. Cooper died in 1918 in Arkansas.
