Collections

This collection consists of two scrapbooks (1896-1900) compiled by Conway R. Howard. The scrapbooks include VMI memorabilia, clippings, photographs illustrating cadet life, programs, and other items pertaining to athletic events. The scrapbooks provide excellent documentation of cadet life during this period.

This collection consists of correspondence (8 letters; dated 1894-1895) from Erasmus G. Hinton to his father. Harley R. Hinton (VMI Class of 1896), the writer's twin brother, is frequently mentioned. Other topics include grades, requests for money, and personal matters. One additional letter is dated February 25, 1907.

This collection consists of three letters (dated November 14-15, 1893) pertaining to Cadet George W. Rouss' decision to run away from VMI. Included is a letter from Rouss to his father (Milton Rouss, VMI Class of 1863) in which he explains his actions.

The Henry A. Wise papers consist of the personal papers of Wise (VMI Class of 1927), including general correspondence, family correspondence, subject files, and materials relating to the publication of his book "Drawing Out the Man: The VMI Story." Inventory is available upon request.

This collection consists of the papers of Henry P. Fry, including:

• A four volume typescript titled "Memories of the Old VMI," written by Henry P. Fry (circa 1950). Fry describes his life as a cadet from January 1898 to June 1901. Particular emphasis is placed on the Class of 1901 and Fry's classmate Cadet George C. Marshall.
• Family photographs

The Henry T. Cocke papers (two items) consist of one letter (dated February 20, 1894) from Cocke to his mother. Topics include a snowstorm, debating society orations, and raiding local hen houses for "rooster fighting" in barracks. Also included is Cocke's account book that contains a list of VMI expenses for 1891 to 1895.

This collection consists of one letter (dated December 5, 1890) from Cadet John Naylor to his father, in which he complains about the character of his roommates and asks to be moved to a different room.

This collection consists of the VMI and personal account book of John Janney (VMI Class of 1896). The account book contains entries for cadet expenses (1893-1896) and personal expenses (1896-1898).

The John Orr, Jr. papers consist of approximately 25 letters from VMI cadet John Orr to his parents. The correspondence contains details about cadet life during the early 1890s, including references to daily routines (e.g., guard duty, meals, and studies), faculty, the town of Lexington (Virginia), and an extensive account of the fight between two cadets that led to the death of Warner T. Taliaferro (VMI Class of 1894). The collection also contains two religious tracts, circa 1890.

This collection consists of one student notebook owned by VMI Cadet John T. B. Cocke, VMI Class of 1890. The volume contains copied poetry, civil engineering class notes, and a list of roommates in Room 18 of Barracks, 1889-1890.
