Background

Scope and content:

This material consists of annual reports of county extension agents, cooperative extension work in agriculture and home economics, plans of work, annual narrative reports for West Virginia counties, annual reports of the Agricultural Extension Service (AES) (1912-1955), plans of work for the AES (1927-1961), and reports of the American Country Life Association Annual Conferences. There is a typescript of the annual report from 1959, a Plan of Work from 1961, and narrative reports from 1961 for 53 of the 55 Counties. See inventory sheets for complete listing of items. See A&M 539 for microfilm copies of county agents' reports from 1912 and 1915-1947.

ADD of 2024 December 4 includes memorandums of understanding, correspondence, etc. pertaining to the early formation of Agricultural Extension in West Virginia and at West Virginia University. Subjects include family food production, farm forestry, dairy, extension at West Virginia State College, 4-H, County Extension, and more. Highlights include a state legislative resolution related to the Capper–Ketcham Act (1928) and a memorandum of understanding between West Virginia University and United States Department of Agriculture to establish the terms of state extension work (1955).

This collection makes reference to "Negro Workers" because that was how the documents' creators described African-American or Black workers at the time.
