Background

Scope and content:

Articles of Association, member list and meeting minutes, 1890, of the Mount Rock chapter of the Keystone League of Christian Endeavor, at Mount Rock, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

The following description was provided by the seller:

"The group was organized by Rev. C. F. Garret, pastor of the Mount Rock congregation of the Evangelical Association which became the United Evangelical Church."

"Included are full details about the group's first meeting on May 6, 1894. That meeting was officiated by Pastor C. F. Garret. Also involved in that meeting were two church members from nearby Mount Holly Springs, in Cumberland County: Brother Wollet and J. E. Newcomer. In the second half of this book, the minutes are taken by recording secretary Ottis Albright."

"The volume also lists the officers of this group. The first officers were President William H. Lehmon, Vicepresident George Finkenbinder, Recording Secretary H. O. Hefflefinger, Corresponding Secretary Mrs. David Cooper, Treasurer E. M. Handshew, Committees Emma Sprout, etc. The book also lists succeeding officers, who followed these first officers in later years."

"Also included is information about the group's various committees: Sunday school committee, Prayer meeting committee, Church flowers committee, Missionary committee, Temperance committee, etc."

Biographical / historical:

The Keystone League was founded as part of a broader effort of youth ministry in the United States. It was associated with the Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor, but was a separate entity under the direction of its own church leadership. The membership was composed of youths, those under 12 years of age holding associate and junior members, while older members held voting rights and were active in official capacities. The society encourages good Christian lifestyles which included a vow to read the Bible and pray every day, temperance, charitable works, and participation in church services, worship, prayer meetings, and Sunday school. In fact, part of the membership pledge involves a promise to involve oneself in singing during worship. Ottis Albright, secretary for second half of the minute book was the younger cousin of Jacob Albright, founder of the Evangelical Association.
