Background

Scope and content:

Includes approximately 80 stereoviews of Mt. Washington and the Cog Railway in New Hampshire, including the building of the Cog Railway. Most of these images were published by the Kilburn Brothers and B.W. Kilburn & Co of Littleton, New Hampshire, but also includes images published by the following: Clough & Kimball, Concord, NH; S. F. Adams Photographer, New Bedford and Oak Bluffs, MA; N. W. Pease, North Conway, NH; J. W. & J. S. Moulton, Salem, NH; Perry Mason & Co., Boston, MA; and F. G. Weller Littleton, NH.

Biographical / historical:

The Kilburn Brothers owned a stereography business in Littleton, New Hampshire. Their business began the same time the Mt. Washington Cog Railway was being built and by 1869, the year the railway was completed, the Kilburn's Littleton factory was producing twelve hundred photographic cards daily and had become one of the largest such operations in the nation.
