Scope and content:

This collection consists of seven bound volumes, 1847-1883, mostly related to James Edgar Chancellor's medical education and service, and miscellaneous letters and papers. James Edgar Chancellor(1826-1896) was the son of George Chancellorand Ann (Lyon) Pound Chancellorof Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He had two brothers, Reverend Melzi Sanford Chancellorand Colonel Lorman Chancellor. He studied at Fredericksburg, Jefferson Medical Collegein Philadelphia, and the University of Virginia(first session, 1846-47). He lived near Spotsylvania Court Houseuntil 1862 when he put his property up for sale and moved to Charlottesvillewhere he practiced medicine at the Confederate States Armyhospital. Some of the materials in this collection relate to his service as a surgeon in the Confederate States Army. He was also an instructor (Demonstrator of Anatomy) at the University of Virginiafrom the fall of 1865 until the spring of 1872.
