<p>This collection consists of seven bound volumes, 1847-1883,
         mostly related to
         <persname>James Edgar Chancellor</persname>'s medical
education and service, and miscellaneous letters and papers.
         <persname>James Edgar Chancellor</persname>(1826-1896) was the
         son of
         <persname>George Chancellor</persname>and
         <persname>Ann (Lyon) Pound Chancellor</persname>of
<geogname>Spotsylvania County, Virginia</geogname>. He had two
         brothers, Reverend
         <persname>Melzi Sanford Chancellor</persname>and Colonel
         <persname>Lorman Chancellor</persname>. He studied at
         <geogname>Fredericksburg</geogname>,
         <corpname>Jefferson Medical College</corpname>in
         <geogname>Philadelphia</geogname>, and the
         <corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>(first session,
         1846-47). He lived near
         <corpname>Spotsylvania Court House</corpname>until 1862 when
he put his property up for sale and moved to
         <geogname>Charlottesville</geogname>where he practiced
         medicine at the
         <corpname>Confederate States Army</corpname>hospital. Some of
the materials in this collection relate to his service as a
         surgeon in the
<corpname>Confederate States Army</corpname>. He was also an
instructor (Demonstrator of Anatomy) at the
<corpname>University of Virginia</corpname>from the fall of
1865 until the spring of 1872.</p>
