Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of photographs and documents relating to General Randolph Tucker Pendleton's military service in World War I and World War II. The World War I items include:

  • A German propanda flyer titled "The German People Offer Peace" (1918), which was dropped from airplannes over France shortly before the Armistice.
  • A circular letter (April 1918) from King George V thanking United States soldiers.
  • General Order (GO) 28-A (February 28, 1919) from General John J. Pershing to American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) soldiers thanking them for their service.
World War II era items include photographs.

Biographical / historical:

Randolph Tucker Pendleton (1889-1973) was a career military officer. He graduated from VMI in 1908 and was commissioned in the Coast Artillery Corps in 1911. During World War I he was Commanding Officer of the 1st Trench Mortar with the I Corps, American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) at St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne (France) offensives in 1918. During World War II Pendleton commanded:

  • 10th Coast Artillery
  • Atlantic Coast Artillery Brigade, Caribbean Defense Command
  • 57th Antiaricraft Artillery Brigade
  • Antiaircraft Artillery Training Center
Pendleton retired in August 1949.
