Abstract:
This collection consists of a Confederate pay and discharge certificate and short biography of David Harrison Gordon. He enlisted as a private in Company L of the Confederate Army's 4th Virginia Infantry on April 16, 1861, in Blacksburg, Virginia, and was discharged after his death due to disease at Staunton on April 18, 1862.

Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains a short biography and a certificate sent home to David H. Gordon's family, by the government of the Confederacy, after he died during the Civil War. The certificate states Gordon enlisted as a private in Company L of the Confederate Army's 4th Virginia Infantry on April 16, 1861, in Blacksburg, Virginia, and was discharged after his death due to disease at Staunton on April 18, 1862.

Biographical / historical:

Born July 7, 1840, in Pulaski County, Virginia, David Harrison Gordon was the fifth child and the second son of George and Susanna Bish Gordon. He enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army on April 16, 1861, at Blacksburg, Virginia, serving in Company L of the 4th Virginia Infantry. He died at Staunton of sickness on April 18, 1862, leaving no wife or children, and is buried in the Pleasant Hill Methodist Church Cemetary with no grave marker.
