Scope and content:

These records are part of Auditor of Public Accounts. Administration of State Government: State-Owned Property - Models and Statues. This series contains receipts from Galt for warrants issued to him for his work on the statue and the expenses of moving it from Florence, Italy, to Charlottesville, Virginia. Each receipt contains the date, the amount received, the name of the person from whom the money was received, and the reason for the payment.

Biographical / historical:

On February 21, 1854, the General Assembly passed an act authorizing the governor to contract with Alexander Galt, Jr., to sculpt a statue of Thomas Jefferson to be displayed at the University of Virginia. Ten thousand dollars was appropriated for the project. The statue was completed in 1860 and delivered to the University in 1861. It was placed in the Rotunda, where it stands today.
