Scope and content:

Deed Books, 1684-1730, of Elizabeth City County Court. The deed book records the name of the grantor and grantee, the residence of both individuals and the description of property being sold or transferred. All the volumes have indexes which contains the first and last names of both parties. It is arranged alphabetically from A-Z. Deed Book, 1715-1721 does not have an index. Deed Book, 1704-1730 has certain ejectments (1736-1770) included in the volume.

Order Books, 1684-1699, 1715-1721, 1723-1729, 1731-1747, of Elizabeth City County Court. The order book records all matters brought before the court when it was in session. It provides a synopses of cases in a neater, more organized form. The volumes are sometimes internally indexed; more rarely, there is a book including: deeds, chancery causes, judgments, records of legal disputes heard before the county court and road ordres. All the volumes have indexes which contains the first and last names of both parties. It is arranged alphabetically from A-Z.

Will Books, 1684-1730, of Elizabeth City County Court. The will book includes the name of testator, list of heirs and year the wills were proven in court and probate records such as inventories and appraisements. All the volumes have indexes which contains the first and last names of both parties. It is arranged alphabetically from A-Z.

Biographical / historical:

Elizabeth City County was an original shire formed in 1634. It is now extinct having been incorporated into the City of Hampton in 1952.

The deed, will and order books of Elizabeth City County in this collection were created by the County Court.

Records were burned or destroyed during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Additional records were burned in Richmond on 3 April 1865, where they had been moved for safekeeping during the Civil War. A few pre-Civil War volumes such as deed books, will books, and order books exist.

These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Hampton.
