Abstract Or Scope

James Barbour's Executive papers primarily consist of incoming correspondence during his three one-year terms as governor from 4 January 1812 to 11 December 1814. These papers are arranged chronologically with pardons arranged to the rear. The correspondence in this collection relates to a variety of topics, however, the most significant correspondence during Barbour's governorship relates to the defense of Virginia from the British during the War of 1812. Other correspondence includes appointments & recommendations for state positions; prisoners & the Virginia Penitentiary; arms & the Virginia Manufactory of Arms; Fort Powhatan; the Powder Magazine at Westham; the Public Guard; the militia; resignations; state expenses & revenue; and others. In addition to correspondence, there are resolutions from the Virginia Senate & House of Delegates; accounts; oaths; muster rolls; pay rolls; pardons; proposals; receipts; election returns; certificates; qualifications; petitions; reports; appointments; resignations; bonds; commissions; orders; proceedings; applications; and other sundry items.

The Carol O'Neale Culnan Architectural Collection contains a mixture of personal and business records related to Culnan's personal life and her architectural practice. Her papers include student work, fiber art and woven textiles, and photographs. Her project records span a variety of projects in the Baltimore/Washington metro area and southwest Virginia, primarily residential projects, and include original drawings and other files documenting jobs and clients spanning the years from 1966 to 2016.

The Secretary of Transportation records consist of ninety archival boxes and are divided into six series. Series have been designated for Appointment Calendars, Constituent Correspondence, Historically Significant Projects & Files, Previous Administrations, Projects & Studies, and Public Relations, Activities, & Visits. These records document the work of the Secretary of Transportation under Governor Mark R Warner. The bulk of the records can be found in the Constituent Correspondence series which includes letters sent to Governor Mark R. Warner and the Secretary of Transportation. Also significant is the Projects & Studies series which contains information related to Aviation, the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of Rail & Public Transportation, Highways, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and the Virginia Port Authority. The Previous Administrations series also contains noteworthy information related to the work of the Secretary of Transportation, particularly Governor George Allen's Commission on the Future of Transportation and Governor Gerald Baliles's Governor's Commission of Transportation in the 21st Century.

The Lieutenant Governor records consist of 101 archival boxes and are divided into three series. Series have been designated for Boards and Commissions, Constituent Correspondence, and Legislation Files & Supporting Documentation. These records document the work of Timothy M. Kaine as lieutenant governor under Governor Mark R Warner. The Boards & Commissions series contains useful documentation on some of the projects Kaine was involved in, especially the Secure Virginia Panel, Virginia's anti-terrorism task force. The bulk of the records can be found in the Constituent Correspondence series which includes letters sent to Lieutenant Governor Tim Kaine and Governor Mark Warner. Lastly, the Legislation Files and Supporting Documentation series provides valuable background information filed in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

Series have been designated for Appointment Calendars, Cabinet Meeting Records, Correspondence & Supporting Documentation, Commonwealth of Virginia's Innovative Technology Symposium (COVITS), Decision Briefs, Projects & Studies, Public Relations, Strategic Plan for Technology, Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA), and Virginia Technology Alliance (VTA). These records document the work of the Secretary of Technology under Governor Mark R Warner. The bulk of the records can be found in the Correspondence and Supporting Documentation series which includes background information on many of the technology issues facing the Warner administration. The Virginia Information Technologies Agency series represents the most significant series since it documents the formation of a new state agency to supply the information technology needs for all state government. The Appointment Calendars series provides an important glimpse into the day-to-day activities of the Secretary of Technology.

Abstract Or Scope

Papers of J. Davitt McAteer documenting his advocacy for mining and other occupational safety. A lawyer and expert on mine safety and health issues, he served as an Assistant Labor Secretary for the Mine Safety and Health Administration from 1993 to 2000. McAteer was also appointed lead investigator into the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster by Governor Manchin in 2010. The collection includes accident investigation reports, conference files, correspondence, health and safety manuals, mine disaster historical files, press clippings, publications, and reports, among other material.
