The mission of the Falls Church History Room is to collect, preserve, and promote materials with historical significance concerning the inhabitants, government, institutions, and environment of the City of Falls Church. This includes manuscripts, maps, newspapers, sound recordings and ephemera.
Description:
We are the public library for the City of Falls Church with over 26,000 card holders for the city and metropolitan area. Our library features a Falls Church History Room which we are seeking to further publicize and describe online to make our archival collections more accessible.

Most records are from 1950-1970 except The Seedling which is complete through 2006 and a few issues each year from 2008 to 2011. The Yearbooks are through 2003 but many years are missing. There is an additional and more complete set of Yearbooks on the shelf at VaC 635.06 F but note that there is no Yearbook from 1984 nor 2005. The yearbooks contain lists of officers, membership contact information, a calendar of club events and more. There are no photographs in the yearbook.

These two boxes contain Sue Bachtel’s chronological files of her involvement with the process of designing, planning, funding, and determining the scope of Broad Street Improvements during the 1980s. Bachtel was a Council Member during much of the effort to widen and improve West Broad Street from West Street to almost Haycock Road. These files do not constitute a definitive reporting of the process of Broad St improvements, nor do they contain all the reports that are referred to in the documents as attachments.

The symposia covered the following subjects: 1994 – the geography, environment, pre-history and Colonial Period of the Falls Church area; 1995 – the Village Period: 1780-1860; 1996 – the Civil War and Reconstruction (1860-1875); 1997 – the Town Period (1875-1948); 1998 – the City Period (1948-1998).

The Historical Commission, upon a Resolution of the City Council, established the Mary Riley Styles Public Library, specifically its Falls Church History Room (or Virginia Room as it was called then) to hold, process, and make accessible the materials of the Commission.
