Buffalo Soldiers
A scrapbook containing photographs and news clippings documenting activities of the Buffalo Soldiers, Inc., a community action organization of young black men in Monongalia County. Their activities include multi-cultural presentations at local schools, recreation programs for local black children, black heritage programs and festivals, presentations on African history and culture in cooperation with African students from West Virginia University, and cooperative activities with NAACP. Papers of Edward C. Tabler (1916-1977) relating to the history of and hunting in South Africa. The journals, photographs, and maps in the collection document Tabler's travels throughout numerous regions in South Africa, and also his research into the history of the country. Tabler was educated as an engineer at West Virginia University and held various positions with Union Carbide. He was also the author of many books on the history of South Africa and big game hunting. Parker, Franklin, 1921-
Correspondence, notes, government reports, newspaper clippings, bibliographies, news releases and other materials on education in Zambia and northern Zimbabwe as gathered by a Benedum Professor of Education at West Virginia University. Addenda include: 1) vitae with list of writings, reprints, career scrapbook, and special journal issue authored by Parker on George Peabody. 2) Twenty-eight articles regarding mostly prominent educators, historians, politicians, scientists, etc. of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Includes articles on: Arthurdale, West Virginia (1933); Philip Vickers Fithian (1747-1776), a "Princeton Tutor on a Virginia Plantation"; and "General Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) and Philanthropist George Peabody (1795-1869) at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, July 23 - August 30, 1869". Also includes biographical sketch regarding Franklin Parker and research partner and wife Betty J. Parker.

Includes a brief biography of McCalla by Helen Goldsborough and copies of the following photographs: Dr. McCalla; the sister ship to "The Star of the Union", on which he sailed; his passport; Kru houses and a Kru village in Liberia; and the American Colonization Society in Washington.

The collection includes periodicals, pamphlets, reports, conference proceedings, photographs, maps, printed ephemera, and manuscripts related to Sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on Nigeria, but embracing political and social history, biography, economics, sociology, languages, culture, and religions of the entire region. The role of Islam in the region is an important component. Documents are primarily in English but occasionally in German, French, Arabic, or Hausa.

Keystone View Company Collection Tour of the World 4.75 Linear Feet

This collection contains a full set of stereoviews from the Keystone View Company's "Tour of the World" series. The set includes stereoview images from six continents, excluding Antarctica. The scenes capture diverse people, monuments, and landscapes. Each stereoview has a description of the scene located on the back. The descriptions are often ethno-centric towards non-western cultures. Points of interest include European-controlled Africa, the Middle East before the creation of Israel, and Germany in between the World Wars. The collection also includes a company guidebook from 1936. Our online list is off by one number. For instance, on page 39 of the Title List, 803, "Climbing Through a Tropical Jungle, Central Africa," in our list it is under volume 5 as number 804.

This collection contains thousands of natural history slides taken by nature photographer Kjell Sandved. Included are slides of flowers, fish, sea anemone, and hundreds of butterfly slides with identification information--family, genus, species, vernacular name, and locality--individually listed on most.

Atkins, Oliver F., 1916-1977
The Atkins collection consists of approximately 60,000 images that extensively document American political and cultural history from the 1940s through the 1970s. Most of the images that document American political life date from the early 1960s through the mid-1970s when Atkins worked as a photographer for the Saturday Evening Post and then later as the personal photographer to President Richard M. Nixon. The bulk of the American cultural documentation is from Atkins' work in the 1950s and early 1960s on specific stories for the Saturday Evening Post, and these stories cover other areas of the United States, particularly the Southeast up through the Northeast coast. There are also a number of international sets of images from Korea, Africa, and India. The collection consists largely of 8x10" and l3x10" color and black and white prints and 35mm and 4"x5" black and white negatives. There are also a number of slides, contact sheets, and oversize mat prints. The collection also includes some correspondence and other documentation on Atkins' work and travel abroad.
