Family genealogies and correspondence for Ruth Woods and Arthur S. Dayton. Includes estate records and Photographs for the Jarvis, Stickler, Dayton, Bosworth, and Woods families. Personal correspondence with and/or pertaining to the Rare Book Room at West Virginia University, World Wars I and II, John W. Draper, West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Dayton Park in Philippi, West Virginia. Also included are research and writings by both Ruth and Arthur Dayton. Newspaper headlines are stored unfolded in an oversize flat storage box; they include: 1. Charleston Gazette, 1944/06/06, D-Day invasion; 2. Charleston Gazette, 1945/05/07, surrender of Nazi Germany; 3. Charleston Gazzette, 1945/08/14, surrender of Japan. Calverley, Mary Eliza Smith
Copies of correspondence and photographs of Mary Eliza Smith Calverley, compiled by her daughter Diana Calverley Haskell into a book titled Travels with Eliza. Eliza was born and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia. She left in 1925 to become personal secretary to Ellen Ayer Wood, wife of textile mill owner William Madison Wood, whom she accompanied through 1940. In 1940, Eliza married Harry Calverley. The majority of the correspondence is from Eliza to her family in Clarksburg, written while she was traveling and living abroad in the 1930s. Travel destinations included Italy and Switzerland. Also includes biographical information about Eliza, her family, and the family of her employer Mrs. Wood, as well as letters and photos of Mrs. Haskell.

Vinyard Family Papers, 1781/1999, bulk 1915/1955 2.10 Linear Feet

Papers of the Vinyard Family who lived near Vinton, Virginia in Roanoke County. The collection is primarily composed of the business papers (ledgers, bills, receipts, legal papers, accounts and printed material) of N. J. Vinyard, Walter H. Vinyard, and Walter D. Vinyard, Sr. who farmed near Vinton, Virginia. The collection also includes papers of Fannie Persinger, James Thomas Wood and S. H. Wood. The Vinyard family lived near Vinton, Virginia (Roanoke County) and engaged in farming and milk delivery. The three generations covered by the collection are N. J. Vinyard, Walter H. Vinyard (1875-1940), and Walter D. Vinyard, Sr., an alumnus of the College of William and Mary.

Wood, Alexander Barbour

This collection includes photographs, ephemera, clippings, correspondence, and printed material created and/or acquired by members of the Walker and Wood families, specifically Harry L. and Eliza Walker and their daughter Nannie and her husband Clarence. Subjects include the Walker-Wood Brothers meat and grocery business, the family home Blandome, properties owned by the families, First Baptist Church, and social organizations in Lexington and Roanoke such as the NAACP and the Virginia Federation of Colored Women. Several of the photographs date to the late 19th century and feature multiple generations of both families. Of particular note are photographs of Freedman's Hospital nurses and a unit of Buffalo soldiers. The families were very active in advocating for the education of African American children in Lexington, and this collection reflects that. The collection includes documents related to the advocacy for and development of Lylburn Downing School and the organization of the Home and School League.

Wood Family Papers, 1806/1878 0.50 Linear Feet

Dated 1806-1878. Business and legal papers of John H. Wood, constable of Louisa County, VA. Included are a receipt for $0.76 which he paid for 138 acres of land, that being taxes due; the papers of William J., David, and Charles W. Wood; and papers of Charles Vest, Albemarle County. Also contains personal letters with economic and political comments.
