Two items collected by Oscar Doane Lambert, including: 1) a blank check from the Merchants and Mechanics' Bank of Wheeling at Morgantown (ca. 1850-1859) and 2) a postcard depicting the lynching of Joseph Brown of Whitmer, Randolph County. Please note that, as depicted on the postcard, this photograph could be disturbing to some viewers. The postcard includes a manuscript narrative recorded to the back describing the lynching, which involved the shooting of policeman Scott White.

Lambert, Oscar Doane, 1888-1959

Oscar Doane Lambert (1888-1959) was a historian, professor of history at West Virginia University, and a manuscripts collector for the University's West Virginia and Regional History Collection. Collection contains twenty-two scrapbooks compiled by Lambert almost entirely filled with newspaper clippings from the 1930s and 1940s that document various aspects of religion and West Virginia history. Most clippings about religion come from God's Revivalist and Bible Advocate and the Pentecostal Herald and Way of Faith newspapers. Scrapbooks also contain religious poetry, articles about West Virginia, World War II, and the genealogy of families from Wirt County, West Virginia. An index to the scrapbook is available in the library.

Ewin, William, 1806-1886

One hundred and fifty-six documents, dating from 1784 to 1837, mounted and bound in a single volume. The collection contains business papers of William Ewin, of St. George, Tucker County, West Virginia, 1835 to 1850, subsequently a surveyor of prominence in West Virginia, and a member of the West Virginia State Senate (1879-1882). Approximately one third of the collection consists of patents, surveys, and other papers pertaining to wild lands in Randolph County, (West) Virginia, of which William Ewin owned a large acreage.
