Collections

This collection consists of the records of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society. Correspondence, minutes, newsletters, and photographs pertaining to various activities of the chapter. The additions to this collection include information about regional chapters other than the Mid-Atlantic Chapter.

This collection consists of materials that chronicle the business dealings of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) as well as the professional work of some of its members from ca. 1955-2022. Documents include but are not limited to correspondence, administrative records, planning and event materials, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The materials also include CD-ROM discs, VHS tapes, and cassette tapes containing photographs, email correspondence, audio and video recordings of events and lectures, event and planning materials, and other professional documentation related to the ASPN. In addition, the accession contains professional papers of individuals affiliated with the ASPN: Jose Strauss, Adrian Spitzer, William Segar, Chester Edelmann, Billy Arant, and F. Bruder Stapleton. Professional papers include but are not limited to publications, correspondence, photographs, article drafts, and research outlines.

Photographs, exhibit programs, correspondence, notes, and other papers of Ami Hirata, a Japanese ceramicist. These materials document her career, personal life, and the Morgantown, WV, gallery (Garo Gallery) she owned with her second husband, Bill Tomlinson.

This addition to MSS 214, Amélie Rives papers, contains correspondence and literary papers documenting the friendship between Virginia Moore, a poet, biographer, and scholar, and Princess Amélie Rives Troubetzkoy, a novelist, poet, and playwright. Both were prominent literary figures residing in Albemarle County, Virginia, in the early and middle twentieth century, when these letters were authored. The letters date from 1930 to 1945, terminating the year of Rives's death. Much of the collection consists of approximately seventy-seven autograph letters signed from Amelie Rives to Virginia Moore, dating from 1934 to 1945, averaging two to four pages in length. Also included are twenty-three autograph letters from Moore to Rives at Castle Hill, one of which (December 2, 1941) contains a page of holographic poetry. Additional correspondence includes eighteen letters from Frances Shepard of Afton, Virginia, an associate of Rives who worked for her, addressed to Moore, spanning 1938 to 1944. A letter dated July 15, 1945, from Shepard describes Rives's final days and her death. Further correspondence consists of three typed letters signed by Elizabeth Winslow; two typed letters from Max Eastman, a poet, writer, and political activist; letters from Roberta Wellford, a Charlottesville reformer and suffragist; topics also include the death of Pierre Troubetzkoy; and three autograph letters from Lily Morrill, a writer and the owner of Enniscorthy in Albemarle County as well as a list of Rives's books and publications. The collection also contains two typescripts, dated 1983, with corrections, of Virginia Moore's biography and memoir of Amelie Rives.

This collection consists of the personal correspondence and records of Ammen L. Burger, Jr., VMI Class of 1938. The bulk of the letters were written to his parents. Included are letters written from VMI during the period of 1934 to 1938, which contain information about cadet life during that period, and letters written during World War II, primarily from stateside training assignments.

The collection consists mainly of certificates presented to Amos R. Koontz, M.D., by the army, together with his medals in a frame, and membership certificates in organizations. Included is a competition for designs for National Military Dress (1809); and shoemaker's account books of Harden Keyser (1849-1861), one of which Mattie Keyser used as a scrapbook at a later period and in which she wrote autograph poems; a souvenir booklet of the Panama Pacific Exposition (1915); and genealogical information on the Koontz, Graves, Stocking, Guy, Snyder, Dolan, Brown and Bageant families.

Personal and professional papers of Amos Ralph Koontz, surgeon. The personal papers, 1865-1986, include the correspondence of Koontz, his wife, Besse (Stocking) Koontz and their son, James William Koontz. Included are travel diaries, documents concerning the College of William and Mary and Johns Hopkins and material relating to social clubs and societies. The professional papers contain correspondence relating to Koontz' medical practice, political material, documents pertaining to military service, memberships in professional organizations, and newspaper and magazine article reprints.

This collection documents the research, public service, and life of Ancella Bickley, writer, educator, speaker, and historian. Includes writings, research materials, and more, focusing on the history of African Americans in West Virginia and the black experience in West Virginia. Collected research materials are predominantly facsimiles. Printed formats include correspondence, clippings, interview transcripts, typescript writings, publications, pamphlets, ephemera, speeches, articles, military records, and more. Other formats include photographs, slides, and audiocassettes.
