Papers of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association

Abstract Or Scope

This collection documents the care and management of Mount Vernon through the work of the MVLA. Types of material include correspondence, reports, memos, notes, personal and biographical information, news clippings, meeting agendas, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera. Several highlights of the collection include the original minutes of Council meetings, scrapbooks and ledgers created by Vice Regents, and early correspondence with Regents and Vice Regents. While the library's collection "Early Records of the MVLA" documents the founding and early years of the organization, the Papers of the MVLA continues where that collection ended and preserves the ongoing story of these women and the fulfillment of their mission. Creators of the collection are largely the board members themselves, along with staff and employees who worked directly with them. Scope notes have been added before the content list of each series to better describe its specific provenance and content. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1950s to the 1990s, however there is a very wide range represented overall, 1858-2016.

Abstract Or Scope

A collection of Genealogical material compiled by A. B. and Charlotte Stickney. Includes notes and letters regarding the Pierpont Family and the Stickney's research. Most of the papers deal with the lines of John, Francis, and Larkin Pierpont. For more detailed listings of the Pierpont and other families, see the processing notes.

Duke family law firm papers

Abstract Or Scope

The Duke law firm papers include correspondence, case files, legal, insuarance, and financial records, as well as ledgers. The files provide extensive documentation of a small-town family practice. Since the insurance business and the Dukes's family business affairs were handled in the same office as the law practice, these files had remained with the legal files. The family correspondence found with these papers was transferred to Special Collections in Alderman Library.

Harry Flood Byrd, Sr. Papers 1911-1965

Abstract Or Scope

The Harry Flood Byrd, Sr. Papers, 1911-1965, consist of 273 linear feet of correspondence, memoranda, records, files of all sorts, photographs, scrapbooks, etc. pertaining largely to the Virginia Senator's political and business careers. Save for his years as governor of Virginia (1925-1929) the collection documents in great detail his activities in politics and business. The bulk of the political papers deal with Virginiastate politics, and present a clear picture of Byrd's leadership of the state Democratic Party. Substantive material from or concerning national figures for the period is not to be found in these papers.

Cazenove Family Papers (MS212)

Abstract Or Scope

This collection covers the history of the Cazenove Family of Alexandria from the 1790s to the 1970s. The first part of the collection features records from James O'Hara Cazenove (1880-1971), consisting primarily of correspondence and records relating to his business interests and investments, as well as legal documents and business related litigation. Some of the correspondence and notebooks relate to his role as an inventor including a patent for an improved eggbeater from the 1920s. It also includes records from his brother, Louis A. deCazenove (1851-1925), primarily related to his education at Cornell University.

Charlottesville Circuit Court records

This collection consists of public records initially filed at the clerk's offices of the Charlottesville Corporation and Circuit Courts. They include, but are not limited to the following: corporate charter books, docket books, court memorandum books, liens books, alcohol inventories, commitment records, writs of execution, local election certifications, and property assessment books.

O.W. Riegel Papers

Abstract Or Scope

Highlights of this collection include material concerning the Washington and Lee Journalism Department, including course material, student papers, and lecture notes. Supplementing this course material are published materials on the history of film, 20th century war propaganda, the Nazification of Germany, Paris in the 1920's and the "Lost Generation." There also includes wide selections of personal research materials for projects such as Riegel's books Mobilizing for Chaos and Crown of Glory; collections on Riegel's travels to Central and South America and Europe including Germany during the 1930s, and the typescript of his unpublished autobigraphy to 1945 titled "Hacking It."

Hibbs papers contains correspondence, photographs, news clippings, scrapbooks, articles, book drafts, and other materials relating to Hibbs's personal and professional life, as well as the publishing of his book History of Richmond Professional Institute: From Its Beginning in 1917 to Its Consolidation With the Medical College of Virginia in 1968 to Form Virginia Commonwealth University.
