Description:

The Washington and Lee University Special Collections and Archives Department houses over 1,000 unique manuscript collections including those of the Rockbridge Historical Society, The American Shakespeare Center, and the Mountain Valley Preservation Association. These collections vary greatly in size, format, and scope. Subjects covered within the collections are diverse and include concentrations in American and Virginia history, regional genealogy, history of propaganda, Southern literature, and theater.

It also houses over 10,000 photographs and prints. Beyond our photograph and print collections, which include scrapbooks, images can also be found within the manuscript collections and University Archives described above. Our photographic holdings vary greatly in size and include numerous formats representative of the evolution of the photographic process. Strengths are local and regional portraiture, landscapes and architecture, W&L University history, including athletics, and late 19th-century travel.

Carter Newman Bealer Papers 28.3 Linear Feet

Bealer, Carter Newman

Includes family and business correspondence and a variety of private collections, such as diaries, playbills, ship menus, as well as a significant collection of autographed photographs and letters of late 19th and early 20th century theatrical and musical performers.

Bell Co., Lynchburg, Virginia, circa 1900 and included is a copy print. Two copy print photos originally by Miley, Lexington, Virginia, circa 1915. A snapshot photo, circa 1920. Six snapshot photos of the fire, 1922. One photo postcard of four men standing on the site after the fire, 1922. A book photo given by Miss Laura Figgat, 1950, with a photo of General Lee's office on the back of it.

Charles Manson Crutchfield Collection of Memorabilia 4.4 Linear Feet

Miley, Michael, 1841-1918

Includes 82 items collected by Charles Manson Crutchfield, including 38 photographs some of which are of Confederate generals and were taken by Michael Miley, postcards and printed materials, most of which concern Washington and Lee University and the surrounding city of Lexington, Virginia during the 1880's

Charles Page Bryan Papers 11 Volumes some colored illustrations

Bryan, Charles Page

This collection contains principally scrapbooks relating to Bryan's service as U.S. ambassador to Brazil (1898-1902), Portugal (1903-1909), Belgium (1909-1911) and Japan (1911-1912) and containing newspaper clippings, press releases, photographs, postcards, greeting cards and other memorabilia. It also includes a scrapbook of family photographs, political memorabilia, and genealogy as well as political correspondence from 1879-1909.

Charles Pomeroy Stone Family collection 0.02 Linear Feet 2 folders

Stone, Charles Pomeroy, 1824-1887

This collection consists of photocopies of four letters, a reprint of the diary of Fanny Stone, which she kept while living in Cairo during the war of 1882, obituaries for Charles Stone, a magazine article about him, a photograph copy of Jennie Stone and John Stone as children, and an original manuscript copy of a certificate issued to Stone on May 10, 1880 from the Vice Counsel General of the United States.

Chittum Family Photographs 27 Item

This collection consists of two CDs of photographs of the Charles H. Chittum Family and descendants. There are also paper copies and identified with genealogy and some family biographical history. Collection includes 1920s era pamphlet written by Charles H. Chittum, in which he tells the story of how he discovered the coffin which was used for Robert E. Lee's burial. Collection also includes some early outdoor views of Lexington, Va.
