Description:

The Washington and Lee University Special Collections and Archives Department houses over 1,000 unique manuscript collections including those of the Rockbridge Historical Society, The American Shakespeare Center, and the Mountain Valley Preservation Association. These collections vary greatly in size, format, and scope. Subjects covered within the collections are diverse and include concentrations in American and Virginia history, regional genealogy, history of propaganda, Southern literature, and theater.

It also houses over 10,000 photographs and prints. Beyond our photograph and print collections, which include scrapbooks, images can also be found within the manuscript collections and University Archives described above. Our photographic holdings vary greatly in size and include numerous formats representative of the evolution of the photographic process. Strengths are local and regional portraiture, landscapes and architecture, W&L University history, including athletics, and late 19th-century travel.

This collection contains bound volumes kept by Rockbridge County physician Samuel M. Hileman. One volume is of his medical lecture notes taken at the University of Virginia. The other four volumes are his account books from his practice. They include his records of treatment and his fees charged and payments received. The accounts for 1862-1865 are entered in a daybook of a Collierstown, Virginia general store.

Tate Thompson Brady Family papers

This collection records the life of Tate Thomas Brady and his wife, Bonnie Fillingane and their family. Tate grew up at the Buffalo Forge estate in Rockbridge County, Virginia, greaduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Montgomery County, Virginia, and worked for Virginia Power Company in various positions and locations in Virginia. Most of the collection includes personal and business correspondence and papers of his family, who lived at the Buffalo Forge estate. Some of the family material includes his brother Douglas "Pat" Brady, Jr., father Douglas E. Brady, Sr., grandfather and grandmother Daniel C. E. and Emma Brady, and great grandfather Charles Patrick "Pat" Augus Brady. Most of the remainder of the collection concerns Tate and Bonnie and their families, which includes correspondence, photographs, their social life, and genealogies. Also included are papers of Sgt. Tate Brady, WWII. A record storage box of slides and books.

This collection includes membership records, officers' reports, business papers, subscription library records, minutes of the Society's meetings and debates, receipts and letters expressing pleasure at being honored by the Society. One receipt, dated December 2, 1841, was given by Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson while he was a Virginia constable. The receipt was presented to the Franklin Society [Library] by M. W. Johnson.

This collection consists of two volumes from the A. Gold and Company located in Brownsburg, Va. The volumes includes accounts for customer purchases. The first volume also includes several pages devoted to the post office that was likely run by the company. The second volume includes several pages that have fabric samples glued in included calico and gingham. The collection ranges from 1866-1880.
