Papers of Dr. Abner Osburn, a physician who practiced in Jefferson County, West Virginia in the late nineteenth century. The collection contains Civil War material, including a letter, currency, and a pass from Harpers Ferry. Other items include bonds for the purchase of slaves, programs from various collegiate events, certificates for the legal practice of medicine, correspondence, and other material. A collection of Genealogical material compiled by A. B. and Charlotte Stickney. Includes notes and letters regarding the Pierpont Family and the Stickney's research. Most of the papers deal with the lines of John, Francis, and Larkin Pierpont. For more detailed listings of the Pierpont and other families, see the processing notes.

Correspondence, diary, and farm account book of a Confederate officer and Pocahontas County cattleman and farmer. The correspondence deals primarily with Gatewood's activities as adjutant general and chief of staff of the West Virginia Division, United Confederate Veterans. The Civil War diary, 11 March-15 December 1865, covers action of Company F, Eleventh Virginia Cavalry, "Laurel Brigade," Rosser Cavalry Division, from Staunton to Appomattox. The farm account book, 1866-1869, also contains an account of Gatewood's Civil War experiences, including fighting in western Virginia and Jones' northwestern Virginia raid of 1863. The account book, 1801-1805, 1816, pertains to the John Rodgers estate. There are a few papers of Gatewood's father, Samuel V. Gatewood. Other subjects and topics covered are farming and stock raising in Pocahontas County, the Warm Springs of North Carolina, William and Mary College, Virginia Military Institute, Ann Smith Academy, Greenbrier Male Academy, Civil War in the Bath County, Virginia area, and cattle trade in the Kanawha Valley.

Includes business and personal correspondence, accounts, legal papers, bank statements, maps, etc. Business correspondence, 1850-1938, include letters concerning A. P. Howard's various business enterprises; farm, livestock, fruit and produce, Wellsville, Ohio; printing firm, Columbus, Ohio; tannery, Corry, Penna.; bank and metal works, Pittsburgh, PA; farm, Congo, WV; subscription agent in Wellsville, Ohio for National Era, Washington, D.C. Earlier letters are to A. G. DeSellem, an uncle, including several concerning missionary work and anti-slavery activities; mention is made of several colleges, Western Reserve, Oberlin, and a school in Albany.

Nineteenth century records regarding African-Americans, including deed of emancipation (1829), two brief autograph letters by abolitionists Charles Sumner and Wendell Phillips (1850, 1882), eight copies of "The Anti-Slavery Record", a significant abolitionist publication (1835), and twenty popular song broadsides featuring minstrel song themes (ca. 1830s-1860s).

Correspondence of General Alfred Beckley and his wife Emily Craig. Several of the letters are by Beckley's mother from Lexington, Kentucky and comment on the Presidential election of 1832 in that state, the reception of President Jackson's in Lexington, 1832 the Cholera scourge, and local social affairs. The rest of the letters are concerned with family matters.

Allen family
Personal and business correspondence, legal papers, ledgers, family records, and other papers of the Allen family of Moorefield, Hardy County, West Virginia. Also includes papers of members of the Barr, Weibley, Taylor, and Gamble families. The majority of the collection includes personal and business correspondence, legal papers, and financial records of Judge James W.F. Allen (1813/12/03 - 1875/07/16), a Hardy County lawyer, Jacksonian Democrat, and Circuit Court Judge in Hardy and Grant Counties (active ca. 1852-1865, 1872-1875). Also includes the papers of Allen's second wife, Caroline Williams Allen (d. 1907), several of Allen's children, and other related people, and a large group of 19th century advertising memorabilia. Civil War records of Capt. Alpheus Garrison, Co. E. 17th Regt., W. Va. Infantry. Garrison was later sheriff of Monongalia county and Postmaster at Pedlar Run. The collection contains county and post office receipts, as well as the papers of Jacob Myers (1804-1874), a local farmer whose estate Garrison administered. Dayton, Alston Gordon

The papers of prominent Barbour County native, Alston G. Dayton (1857-1920), a lawyer, politician, and West Virginia Federal Court Judge, including correspondence, professional papers and manuscripts concerning West Virginia politics and development of state industry. Also included are the papers of Dayton's father, Spencer Dayton, lawyer, and Fred O. Blue, lawyer. Correspondence offers much insight into the attitudes and goals of these men and into their considerable direct and indirect influence on the state's development and welfare.
