The sale was made to the sheriff to satisfy a debt judgment against Lee in Middlesex County Court. The deed also states that Lee has taken an oath required by law for the relief of insolvent debtors.

The deed documents an agreement between Ralph Wormeley and Benjamin Dabney pertaining to the impending marriage of Ralph Woremeley's son, Ralph Wormeley Jr., to Dabney's ward, Elizabeth Boswell. The deed binds Ralph Wormeley, in exchange for payment from Dabney of land and slaves valued at one thousand to twelve thousand pounds, to pay his daughter-in-law an annual income, land, and slaves, should she become widowed before he dies.

In the deed, Fontaine grants Carter Berkeley the right to sell, as necessary, certain slaves inherited by his wife, Alice Berkeley, in order to satisfy debts against her inheritance from the estate of her father, the late Edmund Berkeley.
