Ancient Coins

This collection includes ancient coins from the Roman and Greek empires (500 B.C.-600 A.D.). Some of the coins were purchased in Greece between 1956-1957, others were found during an excavation in Kavala, Greece (dates unknown). For each coin, there is a corresponding envelope with handwritten notes; additionally, the majority of the coins have an informational foam core for a potential display. There is also a substantial amount of documentation relating to the discovery and acquisition of the coins prior to their arrival at Hampden-Sydney.

Box 1 1 Boxes Box 1

This box contains a binder with 33 coins from both Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Each is labeled with an approximate date and type of coin. There is also a wallet labeled "Ancient Coin Replicas" which contains 5 replica coins, each with a name below. Also in the wallet is a loose sheet of paper with corresponding descriptions for each coin.

This box contains information regarding coins 1-20. Each folder corresponds with a coin, and contains an informational foam core, as well as an envelope with handwritten notes relating to each coin.

Box 3 1 Boxes Box 3, Folder 1-15

This box contains information relating to coins 21-33. Each folder corresponds with a coin, and contains an informational foam core, as well as an envelope with handwritten notes relating to each coin. The 14th folder contains two foam cores with summary information about the coins. The 15th folder contains documentation relating to the discovery and acquisition of each coin prior to their arrival at Hampden-Sydney.
