Born in Columbus, Ohio, moved to South Charleston, West Virginia in 1925. Attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute from 1937-1941. Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and Purple Heart during World War II. Collection includes photographs, clippings, citations, and papers collected by Lt. Col. John Coulter for his book on the six Medal of Honor winners who were students from Virginia Tech.

This collection contains three items collected by Herbert Reed Pollard, a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and related to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute Corps of Cadets, including a 1933 ROTC dinner program, a photograph of the 1934 officers of the Corps' Company E, and a photocopied newspaper clipping of the Corps marching in Norfolk, Virginia.

This collection contains the papers of Herman Bruce Hawkins, graduate of Virginia Tech (BS, electrical engineering, 1910), consisting largely of correspondence exchanged with classmate Charles Taylor Adams on topics such as communism, race relations, and nuclear disarmament. Also includes a file regarding Adams' attempt to organize a protest march in response to the appearance of General William Westmoreland on the Virginia Tech campus in 1969, and material relating to the Virginia Tech Distinguished Alumni Citation awarded to Hawkins in 1961.

It includes a list of Niemeyer's expenses while at school in 1876 and 1877, a certificate of accomplishment, well-wishes of classmates, and a photo portrait of Niemeyer in uniform.

The photograph collection at Special Collections and University Archives consists primarily of historical photographs of Virginia Tech, dating back to the 1890s. The collection is also home to historic images of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and Southwest Virginia in general. A photograph collection of faculty and staff from the university is maintained separately.
