The role of Islam in the region is an important component. Documents are primarily in English but occasionally in German, French, Arabic, or Hausa.

This includes materials created by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the United Church Board for World Ministries, the United Church of Christ, and South Africa's Inanda Seminary. The collection covers Lavinia's personal and professional life working and living as a missionary educator in South Africa.

Smith, Lawrence V. (Lawrence Victor), 1931-2010

The Lawrence V. Smith Slide Collection encompasses color photographs Mr. Smith took during a series of visits to Colonial Williamsburg in the 1970s. Although not on official assignment to illustrate a story, his keen photographic eye still responded to the beauty and pageantry of Colonial Williamsburg, offering him the opportunity to experiment with new subject matter. His images capture a wide range of museum activities, exhibition buildings, personnel, and evocative moods within the Historic Area. The trade shops are particularly well-documented with images of the shop exterior and interiors, as well as extensive coverage of trade demonstrations. Those trades represented include the basket maker, brick maker, candle maker, cooper, leather maker, metalsmiths, milliner, printer and papermaker, textiles, and the wheelwright. Many close-up shots document methods used in the 1970s that are not necessarily still demonstrated in exactly the same way by tradesmen today.

The Reston Association records include meeting minutes, budgets, clippings, reports, handbooks, correspondence, and general information on the association. Also included is a series of photography, which has photographs, contact sheets , slides, and negatives. The collection documents the activities of the Reston Home Owners Association, later renamed Reston Association in 1987 to include apartments and condos. The collection covers the period of time from the 1964 to 2006.

Also in the collection are promotional material, media and 35mm slides from the Reston Land Corporation.

The Reston Museum collection is a collection of papers and images pertaining to the development of Reston, Virginia. The collection contains correspondence, reports, paperwork about the creation of Reston and papers from the Federal government. There also pamphlets from different housing developments in Reston and publications with articles about Reston from different magazines and newspapers. There are maps of Reston with slides and photographs. The collection is divided into eight series and is dated from 1962 to 2006.
