Lynch's daybook; blueprint showing coal seams in lower half of Raleigh county. Personal correspondence deals mainly with law practice; politics; the Tidewater and Deepwater Railway companies; appointment as Regent of West Viriginia University in 1887; one ALS from S. B. Brown requesting information about Hon. John Echols for use in a history of the Virginia Convention of 1861, also, copy of information sent in reply.

Campbell, Andrew Nelson, 1842-1919

This is the third accession of the papers of Andrew Nelson Campbell. Mr. Campbell was an attorney in Monroe County, W. Va. He served in the Confederate Army and was a graduate of the Washington and Lee University Law School. He represented Monroe County as a Delegate in the State Legislature, 1872, and was a member of the Board of Regents of West Virginia University. He was, also, Judge of the 10th Judicial Circuit, 1888-1896.

Rowan, Andrew Summers
Burial flag, cord, pictures, and correspondence, 1963-1964, concerning disposition of these items. There is a resume of Rowan's life after 1922 and information on his military service, which included a mission in Cuba prior to the Spanish-American War, which was glorified in Elbert Hubbard's A Message to Garcia. There is a resume of Rowan's life, most notably his U.S. Army career, 1881-1909. An 1881 graduate of West Point, he served on the frontier against Indians and on the International Railway Survey in Central and South America before being appointed military attache to Chile, where he co-authored The Island of Cuba in 1897. This book established him as an expert on Cuba, which led to his assignment as a courier to the rebel general Garcia prior to America's war with Spain in 1898. The successful fulfillment of this mission made him famous and, along with gallantry in the subsequent Philippine campaign, was the basis for his being given the Distinguished Service Cross and other rewards.

Papers of the eighth governor of West Virginia, 1890-1893, who was an attorney in Marion County, 1863-1867, a member of the House of Delegates, 1872-1875, a circuit judge, 1878-1888. Fleming was closely associated with James O. Watson in the development of the coal and railroad industry in the Monongahela Valley. There are scattered papers, including several hundred sermons of Benjamin F. Fleming (1810-1876); one common pleas book; two "Memorandum of Decisions" books from the law firm of A.B. Fleming; and family genealogical records. Among the correspondents are J.N. Camden, H.G. Davis, A.G. Dayton, S.B. Elkins, and F.H. Pierpont.

Personal and business papers of Arthur I. Boreman (1823-1896), lawyer, U.S. senator, circuit court judge, and first governor of West Virginia. The bulk of the collection consists of papers relating to his judgeship and to the law firm of Boreman and Bullocks, Parkersburg, WV. Series include correspondence, notes on cases tried before Judge Boreman, envelope cases of material regarding legal cases in which Boreman was involved, financial material, and political and judicial printed material. Correspondence includes letters to Boreman from Francis H. Pierpont (1866-1867), which concern politics in West Virginia, the admission of Berkeley and Jefferson counties into the state, the Virginia debt, and Reconstruction in Virginia. There is little other material relating to the governorship or political activities. Additional correspondents include J.W. Davis, John J. Davis, D.D.T. Farnsworth, D.H. Strother, J.G. Jackson, Charles J. Faulkner, and E.W. Wilson. Also includes manuscripts of speeches; muster rolls; household accounts; civil and court case papers concerning oil well drilling and sales; railroad property inventories and operation; coal prices, shipping data, and strikes; liquid fuel transportation; and steam and tow boat cargoes, navigation data, and names of boats in service on the Ohio River. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company

Records of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, consisting of five telegrams (1864), one letter with envelope (1863), one freight conductor's report (May 17, 1862, between Piedmont and Grafton), and small map of the Railroad (ca. 1853 - 1863). There is also a letterpress copybook for correspondence of B.L. Jacobs, an employee of the Railroad writing from the Grafton station (43 pages for April to August, 1858). A telegram to Colonel George R. Latham regards an arrest (ca. 1864), and a telgram to Colonel John Ely (August 17, 1864) asks the question of whether a slave of a loyal man in West Virginia can act as a substitute for another "without the master's consent." The copybook includes a letter regarding the wreck of engine 125 (page 61, April 20, 1858).
