The Benjamin W. Clinedinst papers (approximately 60 items) consist of correspondence (dated 1905-1931) between Clinedinst and various members of the VMI administration and Alumni Association. Much of the correspondence concerns Clinedinst's New Market battle painting, which was unveiled at VMI in 1914 and hangs in VMI's Memorial Hall. The papers also include a subject file concerning the artist's painting of post-Civil War VMI faculty.

Crim, Eliza Clinedinst, 1838-1931

This collection consists of the correspondence and postcards (12 items) of Eliza Clinedinst Crim, "Mother of the New Market Corps." Crim writes to Charles M. Wesson (VMI Class of 1867), James B. Baylor (VMI Class of 1867), and others. The letters contain reminiscences about the Battle of New Market, Virginia and various VMI alumni.

The Harris W. Garrow letters consist of correspondence (2 items) related to Garrow. The first letter (dated June 9, 1904) is from Rose Pendleton to Garrow, in which Pendleton thanks Garrow for his contribution to the hospital fund. The second letter (dated December 2, 1916) is from Garrow to A. B. Thorburn of Liverpool, England, in which Garrow mentions the New Market Medal.

The John L. Tunstall papers consist of the personal papers (five items) Tunstall, including:

  • One letter from Tunstall to his mother, in which he describes the cermonies marking the second anniversary of the Battle of New Market (including the reinterment of five of the cadets killed at New Market), recalls the horror of the Civil War, and mentions visit of Robert E. Lee to Stonewall Jackson's gravesite
  • Two notebooks containing VMI engineering class notes
  • One photograph album containing approximately 33 images of classmates, family, and others
  • One book from Tunstall's personal library titled "The Sociable Story Teller"

Letter from John D. Imboden to Abram Fulkerson, Jr. 1 items

Written from Abingdon, Virginia. Letter concerns John D. Imboden's donation to VMI of the field glasses belonging to Union officer W. S. Lincoln of the 34th Massachusetts Infantry. Imboden recounts the events at the Battle of New Market, Virginia that lead to the capture of Lincoln and the acquisition of the field glasses.

Letter to Joseph R. Anderson, Jr.

Autobiographical letter from Moses J. Ezekiel to VMI historian Joseph R. Anderson, Jr. In the letter, Ezekiel recounts his experience as a VMI cadet at the Battle of New Market on May 15, 1864 and his post-VMI career through July 1904. He discusses caring for his classmate Thomas G. Jefferson, who was mortally wounded in the Battle and expresses regret for missing VMI reunion at which New Market Medals were issued to veterans.
