Patton, Fanny Kean Leake

Collection contains a single diary of American woman Fanny Kean Leake Pattaon (1867-1939) during her time with the American Episcopal Mission in Kyoto, Japan. She and her husband Rev. J. Lindsay Patton (1866-1915), worked in Japan as missionaries for fifteen years starting in the late 1880s. By the time the diary was written, they had been overseas for several years and had five children, some of whom were born in Japan. The diary includes documentation about Fanny and her husband's religious activity and travel, as well as details about her every day life doing missionary work and teaching. It also has information about the Otsu Incident (an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Czar Nicholas Alexandrovich during his visit to Japan in 1891), and Russia and Japan's falling out afterwards. Fanny in fact visited the Czar the day after the Otsu Incident.

A 396 page line diary, 78 film negatives, and 55 glass slides created by Garrett Hondelink during a missionary trip to Kagoshima, Japan. The diary entries include descriptions of daily life, travel throughout Japan, and interactions with other missionaries as well as with Japanese officials.

H. M. Lewis Papers 0.01 Linear Feet

Two letters written by H. M. Lewis, a missionary in Sendai, Japan to Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Creasy in Roanoke, Virginia in 1932 and 1934 respectively. One letter includes a description of "child life in Japan" that the author suggests might be useful for a Bible class. The second letter consists of a 15 page description titled "The Log" (circulation 120) and describes in detail travels to different places in Asia. Sections are titled: 'Manila', 'Along the China Sea - Hong Kong', 'Shanghai', and 'Yokohama.'

46 black and white photographs and 7 postcards compiled by Stella Graves, a recent graduate of Oberlin College who moved to Japan to teach at the Kobe College. Photographs include images of the college, surrounding area, American teachers, and pictures of students and area residents. Of the postcards, all are of the Kobe College and one of the photographs was taken by Stella Graves. Most of the photographs are captioned.
