This collection contains the journal kept by Captain Samuel M. Holt while sailing to the West Indies, Greenland, Nova Scotia, Forida and other destinations. The first part of the journal gives detailed accounts of Holt's experience sailing to the West Indies, including the conditions on the boat, the weather, ports of call, and the names of officers on each ship. The journal also includes several newsclippings mentioning holt and other nautical topics, Seamen's Certificates for Holt from 1922, a depiction of the different weather signals using colored flags, photographs of the West Indies, and illustrations of boats taken from newspapers including one about the America's Cup in 1885.

Two letters written by H. M. Lewis, a missionary in Sendai, Japan to Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Creasy in Roanoke, Virginia in 1932 and 1934 respectively.One letter includes a description of "child life in Japan" that the author suggests might be useful for a Bible class. The second letter consists of a 15 page description titled "The Log" (circulation 120) and describes in detail travels to different places in Asia. Sections are titled: 'Manila', 'Along the China Sea - Hong Kong', 'Shanghai', and 'Yokohama.'
