Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains the journal kept by Captain Samuel M. Holt while sailing to the West Indies, Greenland, Nova Scotia, Forida and other destinations. The first part of the journal gives detailed accounts of Holt's experience sailing to the West Indies, including the conditions on the boat, the weather, ports of call, and the names of officers on each ship. The journal also includes several newsclippings mentioning holt and other nautical topics, Seamen's Certificates for Holt from 1922, a depiction of the different weather signals using colored flags, photographs of the West Indies, and illustrations of boats taken from newspapers including one about the America's Cup in 1885.

Biographical / historical:

Samuel M. Holt was born in 1862 and was the son of James Henry Holt, a textile merchant, and Laura Moore of North Carolina. After spending over ten years at sea, Samuel and his brother William ran the Lakeside Mills in Burlington, North Carolina. After his father died in 1897, Samuel moved with his brother to be a cattle rancher in Texas. He married Sarah Belle Griffith and had two children, Thomas Holt and Mrs. Webber Williams. Samuel died in Paris, Texas in 1924.
