Typescripts of letters, 1795-1798, from Henry Tazewell of "Kingsmill," James City County, Va. while in Philadelphia, Pa. serving as United States senator to Richard Cocke, Shoal Bay, near Smithfield, Isle of Wight County, Va. reporting on activities of Congress. In particular, Tazewell refers to relations between France and the United States, the Alien and Sedition Acts and the banking situation.

Includes letters received by James Monroe while minister to Great Britain, from Sir Alexander Munro; letters of George Hay and his wife, James Monroe's daughter, Eliza Kortright (Monroe) Hay. Letters contain information concerning Hortensia (Hay) Rogers and Lloyd Nicholas Rogers. These letters deal primarily with family matters, but include material on the French Revolution and on the Napoleonic Wars. Collection includes Kortright genealogy.

Letter from Richard Henry Lee, Philadelphia, PA to John Page, Williamsburg about the arrival of a French squadron, plans to defeat the English navy, the French minister's audience before Congress, a court-martial and anticipated news from Spain that she "has acceeded [sic] to our alliance and acknowledged our independence." July 25, 1778.
