Washington contracts in advance to purchase all 1,000 bushels of wheat from Mr. Battaile Muse. Purchased for George Washington's mill. Paid 6 shillings per bushel.

This particular document was mailed to Christopher Damron, a lawyer in Allegheny County, Virginia, who had inquired about enrolling his sons (they did not enroll). A handwritten note from VMI's treasurer William S. Polk to Damron appears at the bottom of the document.

Baltimore to Berryville. Letter from artist Alfred Jacob Miller to Lawrence Lewis expressing his thanks to the Lewis family for a previous visit. Disappointed he is unable to travel to Europe as planned due the outbreak of cholera - hopes to return next spring. He references a current project stating, 'I have determined not to touch my large picture until I have returned [from Europe], when I hope I shall be able to produce a painting with credit to myself & to those who have countenanced me in the undertaking.' Moore assures Lewis, 'I have no doubt that we shall [be] able to furnish any quantity of cloth suitable for Negro Cloathing for men & women or superfine Broadcloth if wanted.' Letter from Ann Maury to her distant cousin, Eleanor Love Selden Washington. This is a letter of introduction, in which she presents her neighbor in New York, Charles W. Foster, who wishes to visit Mount Vernon. She claims that Foster is 'making a pilgrimage to that spot which must always have uncommon interest in the eyes of every true American, associated as it is with the memory of the truly great and good man whose name you bear'. A note on the envelope indicates this was hand-delivered by Foster to Mount Vernon. Autograph letter signed, 3 pages, with envelope with partial wax seal.

The Historical Photograph Collection is largely comprised of materials created by or for the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. Photographers primarily include staff members and contract photographers. The collection spans the 1930s to the 2000s and includes analog material made up of a variety of sizes of film negatives providing a visual history of the Mansion, outbuildings, tombs, grounds, events, visitors, collection objects, personnel, restoration, and changes throughout the estate.

Charles A. Derby papers

The bulk of the Charles A. Derby papers consists of Derby family correspondence. Approximately twenty-eight letters were written by Charles A. Derby (dated 1844-1862) and cover the period from late boyhood up to his death in battle in 1862. Included are letters (dated 1846-1847) written while he was a cadet at VMI, as well as correspondence dating from his careers as a teacher and Episcopal clergyman. Two items were written during his brief service in the Confederate Army.
