Diaries of Hostetter, a coal miner from Nelsonville, Ohio, which cover the years 1925 to 1949, one volume for each year. There are no volumes for the years 1933, 1937, 1942, 1944, 1945, and 1947. They contain information on mine production, inspections, accidents, equipment, labor, and other aspects of the coal mining industry.

Nitrate negatives of photographs taken by Arch Ellis of Weston, West Virginia, mainly regarding 4-H Camps held at Jackson's Mill. The main subject of the photographs is campers at the various 4-H Camps (Boys, Girls, Farm Women's, and Volunteer) participating in camp activities. These activities include musical performances by campers; metalworking, weaving, hat making, and other arts and crafts activities; swimming, archery and other sports; and dancing, among other activities. Other subjects include camps in other locations, county fairs, a livestock auction, "Mine Safety Day", and portraits, among others. Contains 62 negatives and 2 prints.

Mine disaster reports, official hearing reports, and hearing and inquest transcripts (1938-1967). Most of the mine disaster reports were created by inspectors from the West Virginia Department of Mines, and some of them involved federal inspectors. Other reports were created by the United States Bureau of Mines and the West Virginia Department of Mines Coal Mine Safety Board of Review. Also includes volumes 3 through 8 of the Decisions of the Interior Board of Mine Operations Appeals (1974-1977). The collection consists of a letter from William N. Page, organizer of the Gauley Mountain Coal Company, concerning dangers in mining; abstracts of land titles granted to Robert Morris in 1795; World War II production statistics for the company; copy of a contract between the company, the United Mine Workers of America, and the Charleston General Hospital for hospitalization of miners and their families; letter outlining the life of Robert Hamilton Morris, director of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, 1946; and two blueprints showing bore holes and face section of the Pocahontas No. 3 and No. 4 coal seams.

McAteer, J. Davitt

Papers of J. Davitt McAteer documenting his advocacy for mining and other occupational safety. A lawyer and expert on mine safety and health issues, he served as an Assistant Labor Secretary for the Mine Safety and Health Administration from 1993 to 2000. McAteer was also appointed lead investigator into the Upper Big Branch Mine Disaster by Governor Manchin in 2010. The collection includes accident investigation reports, conference files, correspondence, health and safety manuals, mine disaster historical files, press clippings, publications, and reports, among other material.

Collins, Justus, 1857-1934

Justus Collins [1857-1934] was an entrepreneur who opened his first coal mine in the Pocahontas- Flat Top coal field of Southern West Virginia, and thereafter operated mines in the New River, Tug River, and Winding Gulf coal fields. He headed a coal sales agency, speculated in coal and timber lands, headed a cement company, and was interested financially in rubber, oil, and gas companies. He played an important role in organizing the Tug River Coal Operators Association, the Winding Gulf Operators' Association, and the Smokeless Coal Operators Association of West Virginia.
