Correspondence, photographs and miscellaneous papers of the Gamble family, who settled in Hardy County during the eighteenth century. The collection contains letters written during the Civil War and reflect the experiences of Mortimer Gamble, Henry R. Gamble, Carr Gamble, Hamilton Gamble and Mary L. (Pratt) Gamble. Henry Gamble served in the 12th Virginia Regiment; Carr in the 62nd Virginia Regiment; and Hamilton in the 23rd Virginia Cavalry. Included in the collection is a reprint of a speech by M.W. Gamble to the Moorefield Memorial Society; legal documents concerning land transactions in Hardy County, and an inventory of the estate of H.M. Gamble.

Color copy of three page Civil War letter dated 30 June 1861 authored by William Bowen Gallaher of Company E, Virginia 1st Cavalry, from a "camp near Hainesville, Berkeley County". It touches on a number of subjects, most pertaining to the Berkeley County and Martinsburg, West Virginia area. Includes references to the aftermath of a battle at Williamsport, recruits from Augusta County and Washington College, among many other topics. Papers of the Tavenner family of western Virginia, including correspondence, newspaper clippings, maps, and other material. Much of the material in this collection regards the Civil War. The Tavenner family was sympathetic to the Confederate cause. One member of the family, William Cabell Tavenner, served in the Confederate army; his letters are part of the collection. This collection also contains material related to families allied to the Tavenner family by marriage, particularly the Withers family, including material regarding Alexander Scott Withers and his book Chronicles of Border Warfare . Records relating to the history of southeastern West Virginia. Most of the items in the collection relate to Greenbrier and/or Monroe County. Includes antebellum (1833-1850; 7 items), Civil War (1861-1863; 4 items), and postbellum (1886-1933; 9 items) materials. Antebellum material includes a land suit, an estate report and schedule, other financial documents, and personal letter. Civil War material includes four letters authored by Confederate soldiers. Two of these letters describe the battle of Carnifex Ferry. Family names Sharitz and Yonce appear in three of the letters. Postbellum material includes pharmacy receipts, personal letters, programs, and a photograph.
