Background

Scope and content:

Publications and photographs relating to West Virginian botany and geology, originating from the WVU Department of Biology and Dr. Charles H. Baer, conservationist and professor of ecology. Topics include geological and archaeological surveys, studies of various sites, and West Virginian Flora. Also includes photographs of Spruce, West Virginia (Pulp Mill and Spruce Hotel, circa 1910-1912). Places mentioned include Randolph, Nicholas, Kanawha, Monongalia, and Barbour Counties, as well as Watoga and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Parks, Dolly Sods, and Cheat Lake. This collection includes Dr. Earl Core's Outlines of the Flora of West Virginia in an Acco binder, published by the WVU Bookstore in 1954. This is one of very few copies, and appears to be related to the "Flora of West Virginia" course he taught at WVU, rather than his seminal Flora of West Virginia.

Biographical / historical:

[The materials were donated by Dr. Arthur and Mrs. Barbara Pavlovic.] Arthur was a professor at WVU, and chairman of the Physics department. Barbara was involved in several local organizations, including the League of Women Voters and the Girl Scouts of the USA. Both were involved in the local community and shared a love of nature and conservation.

[Many of the materials originated from the department and/or Dr. Baer and have some variation of "Biology Department Library" or Dr. Baer's name written inside them.] Dr. Charles H. Baer was a long-time professor in the biology department at West Virginia University, where he taught the department's first ecology class. Baer was also a noted conservationist who played a role in the preservation of places such as Coopers Rock State Park and Dolly Sods Wilderness. In the 1960's we worked with the National Park Service and aided in surveying over 600 sites as possible national landmarks. Baer was also a founding member of the West Virginia Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. During his time at WVU, he worked with Dr. Earl Core and was a contributor to "Outlines of the Flora of West Virginia."
