Background

Scope and content:

Draft version of an academic article by Donald R. Adams Jr. titled "Prices, Wages, and the Standard of Living in West Virginia, 1790-1860". The article regards the relationship between wages and prices in the antebellum period and compares trends in West Virginia to those in the country as a whole. There is also an extensive appendix that contains comparison tables of wages and commodities throughout the time period. The final version of this article was published in the "The Journal of Economic History" under the title "Prices and Wages in Antebellum America: The West Virginia Experience". Adams was Professor of Economics at West Virginia University from 1981 to 2005.
