Correspondence between the managers of company mines at Winding Gulf and Davy, W. Va. For the years 1911 and 1915. Subjects include: production levels of the various mines at Winding Gulf and Davey; available railroad car supply for the mines, New River and Pocahontas Operators Organization; financing mine development at Winding Gulf and Davy; operation difficulties at Winding Gulf mines with mention of specific failures in equipment during periods of operation; quality of Winding Gulf coal; problem of water in Mine No. 1, Winding Gulf; employment of minors in mines; Winding Gulf Association attitude toward railroad demurrage; lack of labor for mines during conditions of miners; German "Socialists" at Mabscott, West Virginia mine; Mabscott mine strike; Bottom Creek mine explosion at Vivian, W. Va.; embargoes placed on Winding Gulf mines by Virginian and C & O railroads; law suits involving Winding Gulf Company; increased and decreased requirements for coal tonnage at tidewater; Justus Collins' position toward the UMWA; 1915 agreement made by New River and Winding Gulf operators with UMWA; betterment of passenger train service by Virginian Railway on Winding Gulf branch; purchase of new coal property; possible interchange of railroad cars between Virginian and C & O railroads to insure adequate car supply at No. 2 Winding Gulf mine; increase of freight rates in 1915; good roads movement in Raleigh County, 1915.
