Biographical / historical:

The 5-cent stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of West Virginia statehood was issued through the Wheeling, West Virginia, post office on June 20, 1963. The stamp is based on a design by Dr. Dwight Mutchler of Ohio University. The map's outline is red against a white background, with the lettering "5c United States Postage" and the Capitol in black. The remainder of the background is green, with the wording "West Virginia" and the dates in white.

This stamp was printed on the Giori press and issued in panes of fifty stamps each. An initial printing of 120 million stamps was authorized.
