Background

Biographical / historical:

Although military training was part of the West Virginia University curriculum since the founding of the school in 1867, the first Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) unit was not installed until World War I. This first unit was established in 1916 and was followed by a Signal Corps unit in 1941 and an Air Force unit in 1946.
