Background
- Scope and content:
-
George DeAntonis was a Morgantown barber who collected pictures of local athletics to hang in his shop. Sources of photographs included the local newspaper, friends, and himself. The photos in this collection are the ones he acquired. When he passed away in 1987 his collection went to his brother, Robert DeAntonis, the donor.
The collection documents primarily team athletics for young people, including little league baseball, midget league football, and grasshopper basketball. There are also athletics photos from Morgantown and University High Schools, and from local junior high schools (including Riverside and Westover Junior High Schools), and from St. Francis Catholic School.
Other photos document miscellaneous Morgantown subjects, including recreation (Marilla Park, Cheat Lake), the Miss Sterling Pageant (sponsored by Sterling Faucet company), Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, school activities (including many group portraits), and cheer leaders.
Local businesses sponsoring little league baseball teams, as documented by many of the photographs, include: City Savings and Loan, Elks, First National Bank, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, Loving Furniture, Lions Club, Royal Crown Cola, Rotary, Sanitary Milk, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Wilson Chevrolet, and others.
