- Abstract:
- Two historical narratives authored by William B. Maxwell, a real estate lawyer in Kanawha County, West Virginia. One concerns the history of Kanawha valley lands from ca. 1770 to ca. 1830, focusing first on the acquisition and management of these lands by George Washington and his friend James Craik, a military surgeon, and then by Craik's son, who was also named James. Other land claimants mentioned include Colonel John Lewis and Captain John Dickinson of Dunmore's War, and members of the Shrewsbury and Summers families. The second article, published in the newsletter of the West Virginia Historical Society (Spring 2010), focuses on the Kanawha valley lands of George Washington and his descendants.
