- Nave, Jessie Campbell, 1867-1932
- Abstract:
- Two diaries (1891-1892) authored by Jessie Campbell Nave (born 1867, died 1932 as Jessie Hill), the great niece of Alexander Campbell, a leader in the Protestant religious movement known as the "Disciples of Christ" and founder and first President of Bethany College. Jessie's father, Archibald W. Campbell, whose activities are documented in the diaries, was the editor of the "Wheeling Intelligencer." These diaries document her experiences as a married upper-class late 19th century West Virginia woman, and member of the prominent Campbell family. Her first husband was William Nave. Many facets of West Virginia history are touched on, including the Campbell family, the Campbell Mansion (which is a historic site), Bethany College, Wheeling, and daily life in Bethany; other topics include women's history, European travel, and African-Americans. Transcripts are available.
