Scope and content:

The collection consists of seven documents. A program for Sweet Briar College commencement on 3 June 1919 and a small diploma are included documenting Sanders' achievement of an A. B. degree. An Episcopal Church marriage service booklet and a church marriage certificate, and an original marriage certificate records the marriage of Caroline Sharpe to Marion Sanders in May 1924. Finally, two transcript from Sweet Briar, issued 19 September 1930 and 20 October 1942, provide a list of courses and grades received while Sanders was a student there.

Biographical / historical:

The daughter of Richard Sharpe and Margaret Johnston Sharpe, Caroline Johnston Sharpe was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on 9 September 1897. She attended Sweet Briar College near Lynchburg, Virginia and graduated 3 June 1919. While at Sweet Briar she met Marion Sutton Sanders, a student at nearby Washington and Lee College; they were married on 31 May 1924 in Wilkes-Barre and lived in New York and Bristol, Virginia before moving to Wytheville in 1931. Their only child, Richard Sharpe Sanders, was born in October 1925.

Caroline Sanders had a vibrant community and civic life in Wytheville. She volunteered with the American Red Cross, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Diabetes Association, and Barter Theatre. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. Sanders died on 18 March 1981.
