Scope and content:

This collection contains four items including an 1815 tax valuation listing monetary value and description of property owned by George Oury in Wythe County. A letter dated 11 June 1907 from Eunice Oury of Murray, Kentucky to Catherine Shortt of Wytheville is also included. A letter from Guy L. Oury to Eunice Oury dated 27 September 1907 and a letter from Eunice Oury to Catherine Shortt dated 5 February 1908 complete the collection.

Biographical / historical:

The son of Wendel Oury and Katherine Peterpanner, George Oury (1767-1828) was a prominent citizen of Evansham (Wytheville, Virginia). By 1815 he owned over $14,500 in property and ran a stage line carrying mail into Tennessee. Oury also owned a tavern in Evansham and served as deputy sheriff several times between 1790 and 1812. However, by 1820, he fell into debt and mortgaged most of his assets.

Oury first married Elizabeth Adams by whom he had two children, Augustus Oury and Marius Oury. In 1800 he married Nancy Sanders and had nine children including Catherine Oury (married Richard Mathews), Elizabeth Oury (married John Adams Sanders), Senah Newell Oury (married John Foster), John Sanders Oury (married Julia Clara Ryan), Robert A. Oury, Stephen V. Oury, Susan Bradley Oury, Nancy Sanders Oury (married Carroll Long), and Malvina Smyth Oury.
