Scope and content:

An extensive and varied receipt book with formulas for both the arts and household activities, signed by James Booth. Included for the arts are recipes for oriental, black and red inks, gold lacquer, Japan blacking, French polish, many varnishes, Prussian dye, reproducing ancient cameos, and washing leather and vellum bookbindings. Household recipes include polishing liquid, paint removers, poison for rats, Miss Crossley's scented powder, "bluing and washing woolen goods after the Welch method," French polish, remedies for burns, tooth powder, and shampoos. Thought to be English in origin. Many of the items are dated, the earliest being 1826.
